How the Dataset Was Built

Public Goods Group (PGG) built this dashboard to bring together public data and community survey results in one place. The process started by identifying what to measure, drawing on public health, demographic, and socioeconomic data across every community the CHNA partners serve, and then benchmarking those indicators against Georgia and national values to provide context.

Survey results from more than 3,600 community members, gathered through both online and in-person outreach, were brought into the dashboard alongside the public data, giving each indicator a fuller picture than any source could provide alone.

Bringing all of that into Tableau meant structuring the data so it could actually be explored, not just displayed. That typically involves organizing indicators into clear categories, building out filters so users can move between the full region and individual service areas, and setting up maps and charts that respond as someone narrows their search. Much of the work is making sure the data connects cleanly behind the scenes, since a dashboard only works if the numbers update correctly no matter which combination of filters someone selects.

That flexibility was intentional. Someone can look at the region as a whole to understand broader trends, or narrow in on a single ZIP code to see what’s happening in a specific community. The dashboard was built to work either way, since the right level of detail depends on what someone’s trying to answer. The result is a tool meant for exploring, not just reading.
